Meta Is Shutting Down One of the Best Games on Oculus on March 15

Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second
  •  Bogo is set to shut down on March 15, with its loyal fans feeling sad about Meta’s decision.
  •  Meta discontinuing Bogo comes alongside shutdowns for other VR games like Dead and Buried.
  •  Though fans have been left in the dark as to why the shutdown is happening, the leading theory is that it will not be compatible with upcoming operating system updates.

Bogo, the beloved virtual reality pet app, will unfortunately no longer be available to play starting on March 15. The Meta Quest team has officially communicated to all Bogo owners via e-mail that all support for the game will cease across all Meta platforms starting Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11:59 PM PT.

Bogo was initially released in 2019 as a free Oculus app that provided gamers with a short and lighthearted virtual reality experience. The game allowed players to own, raise, and interact with their own adorable alien-like virtual pet. The gameplay consisted of playing fetch with the Bogo pet, feeding it some delicious-looking Bogo food, brushing it, and engaging in various other entertaining mini-games with the little creature. While Bogo may not have been a highly intricate VR title, it did manage to provide its loyal fans with numerous hours of enjoyment.

The decision to make Bogo inaccessible has left a lot of gamers feeling sad and confused, especially as the title doesn’t even require an internet connection to be played. The Meta Quest team did not provide any additional explanation for the game’s demise. That being said, many are speculating that some new upcoming operating system updates will render the game incompatible with the Meta VR devices. A Reddit user going by the name of CuriousChimp who claims to have been part of the team responsible for developing the game has confirmed that theory.

Meta Discontinues Several Other Games

The impending discontinuation of Bogo is part of a broader decision by Meta to cease support for several VR titles. Meta’s popular title Dead and Buried, along with its sequel, Dead and Buried 2, will share the same fate on March 15. While the other aforementioned games were free, Dead and Buried 2 cost players $20 to purchase, and it is unlikely that they will be issued a refund for their orders. As such, many Meta Quest users have decided to reconsider purchasing games on the Meta platform for the time being, given the risk of future discontinuations and potential financial losses.

Even though March 15 will mark the end of an era for Bogo enthusiasts, those looking to dabble in nostalgia can still interact with their cherished virtual pet for a few more days. While Bogo’s days are numbered, gamers can check out and enjoy some other quality free virtual reality games that are available on the market.
