A powerful earthquake struck near the beach resort of Acapulco in southwestern Mexico on Tuesday, killing one person. Please note that the magnitude of the earthquake has been measured at 7.0. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake, which struck 11 miles (17.7 km) northeast of Acapulco, shook the hills around the city. The earthquake was so strong that trees fell at places and huge stones spread on the roads, causing power outages in many states.
One person died in the terrible tremors of the earthquake. Guerrero state governor Hector Estudillo told local television that one person had died from a collapsed checkpoint in Coyuca de Benítez, a small town west of Acapulco.
Describing the earthquake, said Jessica Arias, who was part of a group of eight people arriving from Mexico City, the capital. They said that ‘we were only checking into the hotel, so we have everything we need.’ He told that the earthquake was so strong that, it is still not safe to enter the hotel. Others said they were having dinner or were in a cinema hall when the earthquake struck.
Andrea del Valle who was sitting on the sidewalk with her partner after leaving a cinema said that ‘we were in shock, there was no earthquake alarm, so we felt it when it was already happening. ‘
Heavy damage has been caused by the strong earthquake. Authorities have reported a gas leak at a cafe as well as damage to a hotel and a public hospital. Giving news of relief, President Andres Manuel López Obrador said no major damage was caused by the quake in Guerrero, neighboring Oaxaca, Mexico City, or any other region.
