Sleep Problems Increased Due To More Screen Time During The Pandemic, Internet Usage Increased Twice In Lockdown

A new study says that people’s sleep has been adversely affected due to excessive screen time during the corona epidemic. The study’s findings have been published in the journal Sleep. The study said that internet usage in Italy during the lockdown increased almost double compared to the same period a year ago.

Researchers conducted this study on 2,123 people in the third and seventh weeks of the first lockdown imposed in Italy last year. The first survey was conducted during 25-28 March 2020. In this, the researchers assessed sleep quality and symptoms of insomnia using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Insomnia Severity Index systems. The second survey was conducted during 21-27 April 2020. During this survey participants were questioned about the use of electronic devices two hours before sleeping.

92.9 percent of the survey participants reported an increase in their use of electronic devices. They reported decreased quality of their sleep, increased symptoms of insomnia, and decreased total sleep duration. Apart from this, the time of sleeping and getting up has also increased. Most people complained of moderate to severe insomnia symptoms. However, 7.1 percent of people said that they are spending less screen time in the evening. He reported that his sleep improved and the symptoms of insomnia reduced.
