Former police officer Derek Chauvin has been convicted of murder in connection with the death of African American black national George Floyd. The decision has been welcomed by several Indian-American lawmakers and groups. He died last year after Chowwin pressed Floyd’s neck to his knee. There were large-scale protests in the US after the video of the incident went viral.

Congress MP Pramila Jaipal said that today George Floyd’s justice has been given, but just blaming Derek Chowwin cannot fix the system that acts as terrorizing and killing a black citizen. This prevents George Floyd from being brought back. He said black life matters and we have to keep fighting for it.

Welcoming the court’s decision, Congressman Ro Khanna said the decision will fix accountability but does not change the fact that George Floyd should have survived even today. He said the time has come for us to pass the Justice in Policing Act. My heart is with Floyd’s family. His life mattered. Black life matters.

President Joe Biden also welcomed the court’s decision. Biden said, ‘This decision cannot bring George back, but what we can do next will be decided. Let there be no violence, let there be peace. It’s time to unite as Americans and fight racial prejudice. ‘

The court jury consists of six white people and six black people. The debate lasted almost all day, with prosecutors arguing that in May last year Chauvin took Floyd’s life away in such a way that even a child knows that method was wrong.
