Man charged over crash that killed young lawyer in Sydney’s east

Police have charged a 63-year-old man after an alleged hit and run which resulted in the death of lawyer Mitch East in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Officers were called to Fletcher Street in Tamarama shortly after 4am on Sunday, where they found 28-year-old Mr East critically injured.

Police and paramedics performed CPR but were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.

Mr East had previously worked at the Supreme Court of New Zealand and as an adviser for the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch Terrorist Attack.

Metropolitan Crash Investigators established Strike Force Dunguid to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police said a man was arrested on Friday by investigators at Granville Police Station following an extensive investigation.

He was charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning death — drive manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death, and driver use mobile phone when not permitted.

The Bexley man was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Mr East’s law firm said an email had been sent to all staff on Monday morning confirming his identity.

“Arnold Bloch Leibler’s Managing Partner Henry Lanzer and Managing Sydney Partner Paul Rubenstein paid tribute to Mitch, describing him as a highly talented lawyer and popular and valued member of the firm, whose loss will be deeply felt,” they said.

“The partners expressed heartfelt condolences to Mitch’s parents, his partner and many close friends, both within and outside of Arnold Bloch Leibler.”
