McDonald’s Japan announced on the morning of the 16th that the system that had been out of order since the afternoon of the 15th had been restored, and that almost all of its stores had resumed normal operations. Cashless payments at stores and mobile ordering from smartphones are no longer available, and many stores have temporarily closed. Similar failures have occurred at McDonald’s restaurants in the UK, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other countries.

In Japan, since the night of the 15th, the system has been restored, and stores that are ready have resumed operations one by one. Even after reopening, mobile ordering and home delivery services remained unavailable due to maintenance, but as of 11:30 a.m. on the 16th, almost all of the approximately 3,000 stores nationwide had returned to normal business.

McDonald’s Japan said the cause of the failure was a problem that occurred when an external IT (information technology) system company with which it contracts globally changed settings. It is explained that the incident was not caused by a cyber attack. McDonald’s Japan apologized, saying, “We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers.”
