Sonam Wangchuk’s hearing updates: Supreme Court posts the case for October 14; allows Dr. Angmo to meet Wangchuk

‘The Supreme Court on Monday (October 6, 2025) heard a habeas corpus petition filed by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, against the preventive detention of her husband under the National Security Act (NSA), 1980, following violent protests on September 24 in Leh.

A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria heard the plea on the day of reopening of the top court after the week-long Dussehra vacation.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who represented Dr. Angmo in the court, said that the grounds of detention of Mr. Wangchuk were not shared with his family.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, as a reply to Mr. Sibal’s argument, said the law only requires the service of the grounds of detention to the detainee. Justice Kumar said the Solicitor General may or may not share the communication of the grounds of detention with the wife.

Objecting to the argument of Solicitor General Mehta, Mr. Sibal asked how the habeas corpus petition could be argued if the grounds of detention are not shared.

The Supreme Court posted the next argument on October 14, granting Dr. Angmo permission to meet Mr. Wangchuk in jail.
