Hong Kong. Amid tensions with Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping has asked his troops to be mentally and physically ready for war. According to news agency Xinhua, Jinping was on a visit to the military base in the south of Guangdong state on Tuesday. Talking to the Jawans of the People’s Liberation Army Marine Corp. in Chaojhao, he said he should be on high alert. He asked his soldiers to remain absolutely faithful, absolutely pure, and absolutely credible.
The main objective of Xi’s visit to Guangdong was to deliver a speech on Wednesday to mark the 40 anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was established in 1980 to attract foreign capital and played an important role in helping China’s economy the world’s second-largest.
The visit of Shi’s army base has occurred at a time when tensions between China and the US are at the highest point. The White House informed the U.S. Congress on Monday that it was planning to sell three advanced weapons systems to Taiwan, including artillery rocket systems (HIMARS).
China has been stung by the US announcement. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian has asked the US to “immediately cancel any arms sale plan to Taiwan”. Also demanded to end all military relations with Taiwan.
Despite the disagreement of the Chinese government, relations between Washington and Taipei have improved under the Trump administration. In August, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar visited Taiwan. After several decades, it was an American senior official’s visit to Taiwan.
