Mumbai Indians have taken up the final playoff spot after beating the Delhi Capitals by 59 runs. The MI bowlers were all over the DC batters and squeezed the life out of them for much of the chase. Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner took three wickets each while Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Will Jacks and Karn Sharma took a scalp each. DC were all out for 121 chasing a target of 181.
Suryakumar Yadav’s 43-ball 73 not out helped Mumbai Indians to get to 180/5 after 20 overs. SKY’s astonishing knock came in an unbeaten 57-run stand off 21 balls with Naman Dhir, who finished with a score of 24 in just eight balls. Their final flourish helped MI paper over a sluggish early half of the innings, particularly in the middle overs. DC gave away just 17 runs in the 20 balls leading into the ten-over mark, with MI on 80 for 3. However, SKY and Dhir went ballistic towards the end to almost undo that good work.
So far, there are three teams who are assured of qualifying for the IPL playoffs: Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. This means that just two teams are now left standing to fight for the one playoffs spot remaining. Those two teams — Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals — will incidentally play against each other on Wednesday in a group stage clash that will decide which of the two teams will be in the Playoffs.
