IND vs ENG 2025: ‘Whatever I have seen …’: Sachin Tendulkar on Shubman Gill’s captaincy, sends heartfelt Guru Purnima message

As the iconic five-minute bell rang at Lord’s to signal the start of the third India-England Test, it was none other than cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar who stood proudly on the balcony, performing the honour. But Tendulkar wasn’t just making headlines for tradition. He also took the moment to applaud India captain Shubman Gill’s impressive leadership while marking the occasion of Guru Purnima with a touching tribute.

Tendulkar said, “He’s been good. He’s very calm and composed. And I strongly believe that the rest of the 10 players also react to what he is doing. Whatever decisions he’s taken, they’ve been measured, well thought of. His batting is complementing that as well. If a captain is in good form, it makes a huge difference on decision making.”

Tendulkar further praised Gill’s form, saying, “He’s been batting brilliantly. Normally, the opposition looks to find weak areas in your technique, but at this point, it’s been remarkable. Whatever I have seen, it’s been special.”

Reflecting on India’s comeback after their opening Test loss, he added, “I’m very happy with the way we came back in the second match. In the first, there were a few dropped catches – and as my coach used to say, ‘catches win matches’.”

On the occasion of Guru Purnima, the Master Blaster offered gratitude to all mentors: “I’d like to wish all the Gurus – thank you for everything you’ve done for us. We value your contribution.”

Tendulkar’s day at Lord’s was made even more special as his portrait, painted by Stuart Pearson Wright, was unveiled at the MCC Museum. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “In 1983, when India won the World Cup, it was my first introduction to Lord’s. Today, with my portrait going up inside the Pavilion, it feels like it’s come full circle.”
