Unplugged bliss: Spain’s power outage turns cities into street parties with concerts, picnics and much more

A massive and unprecedented power outage hit Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France earlier this week (March 28), disrupting the daily lives of millions. The blackout, which began midday on Monday, left people without electricity, subway services, phone lines, ATMs, traffic lights, and other basic necessities.

Major cities such as Madrid, Lisbon, and Barcelona remained without power throughout the day. The exact cause of the outage is still under investigation, though early reports suggest a possible failure of an electricity interconnector—a high-voltage land or subsea cable that links national electricity grids.

While the blackout brought cities to a standstill, it also sparked something unexpected and heartwarming. In an age where life revolves around electricity, internet, and constant connectivity, the outage turned into a spontaneous moment of digital detox.

Seizing the opportunity, people took to the streets to reconnect—not online, but in person. Scenes of residents dancing, singing, reading, and simply spending time together filled the otherwise powerless cities. For many, especially the younger generation, the experience offered a rare glimpse into pre-internet times.

A now-viral video posted by Instagram user @hanneleteras captured the essence of this unplanned celebration in Barcelona. The footage shows locals picnicking on the streets, reading books on roadside benches, and enjoying live performances by street musicians.

The video was captioned: “Apocalypsing in Barcelona – freed from the screens for one fleeting moment. Same time tomorrow? (sic)” — a tongue-in-cheek reflection on how liberating life can feel when unplugged.

While a sudden internet or electricity outage might sound nightmarish to many, others—especially those who remember life before digital dependency—found joy in the unexpected pause.

That said, which side are you on? What would you do if electricity and the internet disappeared from Hyderabad for a day?
