Maldives bans Israeli passport holders over Gaza war atrocities

The Maldives has officially banned people with Israeli passports from entering the country. The decision came after the Maldives’ parliament voted in favour of an amendment to its immigration law.

A statement from the president’s office said that Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu signed an amendment to the nation’s immigration law after its approval by parliament on Tuesday.

This means any tourists carrying Israeli passports are no longer permitted to enter the Maldives.

“The ratification reflects the government’s firm stance in response to the continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people,” the president’s office said in its statement.

This action is in line with the Maldives government’s protest against Israel’s aggression in Gaza. Israel denies all claims and says that it is operating according to international law to defend itself after the October 7 attacks.

RESTRICTIONS ON ISRAELI CITIZENS

This is not the first time that the Maldives has stood up against Israel. Earlier in June 2024, President Muizzu had already requested a ban on travel for Israeli passport holders, after a suggestion from his cabinet. Israel’s foreign ministry then advised its citizens to avoid travelling to the Maldives.

Israel has repeatedly denied allegations of genocide put forward by organisations like Amnesty International and the government of South Africa at the UN’s International Court of Justice.

In February 2025, 59 Israelis travelled to the Maldives, reported the Associated Press.

TOURISM INDUSTRY COULD FEEL THE IMPACT

Tourism plays a big role in the economy of the Maldives. It earned over $5.6 billion from tourism in 2024, contributing approximately 21% of its GDP.

The Maldives is globally famous for its beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and crystal-clear waters.
