Israel’s chief army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Effie Deffrin on Friday, said that Israel has intercepted more than 100 drones fired by Iran in retaliation over the past few hours. “Some 200 Israeli fighter jets participated in the operation, striking some 100 targets,” he said, adding, “the attacks were continuing.”
What has Iran said: Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed to deliver a ‘harsh punishment’ after an Israeli strike damaged Iran’s nuclear program and killed several military commanders, including the head of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, and the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, Mohammad Bagheri. Claiming United States involvement in the strike, Iranian armed forces spokesperson Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi told state TV, “Israel and the United States will pay a heavy price for the attack.”
United States’ involvement in attack unclear: US President Donald Trump told Fox News that he was aware of Israel’s strikes beforehand, adding that “there were no surprises.” However, earlier today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that US had no role in the attacks and Iran should not target US interests or personnel.
