From Ghana to Brazil, what PM Modi’s 5-nation visit means for India’s global strategy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick-off his five-nation tour starting Tuesday, during which he will visit Ghana, Trinidad, Tobago, Argentina and ultimately Brazil for the much-awaited BRICS Summit. The tour is considered to be quite significant as it includes PM Modi’s first visit to these countries, except for Brazil.

PM Modi’s visit to Ghana: Energy, economy, defence in focus

This will be PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to Ghana between July 2 and July 3, and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 30 years. Ghana’s President, John Mahama, who took office in January, had visited India in 2015 for the India-Africa Forum Summit.

Ghana is one of the fastest-growing economies in West Africa. Its ties with India are strong, especially in trade and investment. India is the biggest buyer of goods from Ghana, with gold making up over 70% of what India imports from the country.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet President Mahama to review the current partnership and explore ways to strengthen cooperation in areas like economy, energy, defence, and development.

PM Modi’s visit to Trinidad & Tobago: Strengthening economic ties

This visit between July 3 and 4, holds special significance as it marks 180 years since Indian immigrants first arrived in Trinidad and Tobago. Today, nearly 40–45% of the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean lives in T&T. In fact, the country’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo are both of Indian origin.

This is Modi’s second visit to the Caribbean in just eight months, following his trip to Guyana in November 2024. This highlights India’s growing focus on the region. Economic ties between India and T&T have also strengthened, with total trade reaching $341.61 million in 2024–25.

PM’s visit to Argentina: Reviewing areas like farming, mining, oil and gas

PM Modi will be meeting Argentine President Javier Milei during his visit to Argentina between 4 and 5, which is also going to be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders are expected to review their current partnership and explore ways to strengthen cooperation in areas like defence, farming, mining, oil and gas, and energy. They had last met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024.

India and Argentina have made quite the progress while working together on mineral resources, like lithium, which is important for India’s shift to clean energy. Argentina is also one of India’s main suppliers of soybean and sunflower oil. In fact, last year, India was Argentina’s fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

PM Modi’s visit to Brazil for BRICS Summit: Key global issues under spotlight

PM Modi will be meeting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro between July 5 and 8, followed by an official State Visit. Modi is expected to speak on key global issues like reforming international institutions, peace and security, fair use of artificial intelligence, climate change, global health, and strengthening multilateral cooperation. He is also expected to hold several one-on-one meetings with other world leaders during the summit.

After the BRICS meeting, Modi will travel to Brasilia for a State Visit, where he and President Lula will discuss ways to expand the Strategic Partnership between India and Brazil. The talks will cover areas such as trade, defence, energy, space, technology, farming, and healthcare. Brazil is currently India’s biggest trading partner in South America.
