Cyclone Montha is expected to make landfall today, with the Bay of Bengal turning rough near Chennai’s Pattinapakkam beach close to Marina in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai.
Continuous rain has been lashing Andhra Pradesh’s Rajolu constituency since yesterday due to the impact of Cyclone Montha. Authorities have set up 58 main rehabilitation centres, along with additional ones in every village, to accommodate evacuees from coastal areas.
Meals have been arranged for around 1,000 people staying at these centres, with the number expected to rise. Officials have also identified 45 pregnant women across the constituency and admitted them to nearby PHCs as a precaution.
District officials said all necessary measures are in place to tackle the cyclone’s impact and urged residents to stay indoors unless essential.
In view of Cyclone Montha forming over the central Bay of Bengal, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has pre-deployed 25 teams across the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Puducherry likely to be affected.
Another 20 teams have been kept on standby at strategic locations for immediate deployment if needed. Each team is equipped with boats, communication gear, cutting tools, and other specialised rescue equipment for evacuation, relief, and restoration operations, the NDRF said.
Director of the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, Radheshyam Sharma, said that several parts of Rajasthan recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours due to the combined impact of Cyclone Montha over the Bay of Bengal, a depression over the Arabian Sea, and another system over northwestern India.
