Hathras Stampede: Conspiracy Not Ruled Out, Says Special Probe Team SIT’s Report

Read Time:1 Minute, 59 Second

A week after 121 people lost their lives in a stampede during a satsang in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the July 2 case, on Tuesday submitted a nearly 300-page report. Sources said the report held overcrowding as the main reason behind the stampede, and it did not rule out ‘conspiracy’ in the incident.

Later, the Uttar Pradesh government suspended the local Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), a circle officer and four others on the basis of the SIT report.

The report held the organisers responsible for the stampede, claiming they did not make arrangements to manage the crowd and also fixed the responsibility of administration, according to official sources.

It said the local police and administration did not take the event seriously and failed to provide proper information to senior officers.

Investigations into the case had revealed over 2 lakh people had arrived for the satsang, whereas the authorities had sought permission for nearly 80,000 people.

REPORT INCLUDES STATEMENTS OF EYEWITNESSES, AFFECTED FAMILIES

The SIT report also included the statements of 119 people, including from the Hathras District Magistrate, Ashish Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Nipun Agarwal – SDM, and others.

The SIT report also included statements from the affected families and several eyewitnesses.

Earlier too, the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Commission team had recorded statements of several eyewitnesses in the Hathras stampede case.

PIL SEEKS PROBE IN HATHRAS STAMPEDE CASE

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that a date of hearing has been accorded to a PIL seeking a probe into the Hathras stampede.

“I have ordered listing of the plea yesterday itself,” Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said when PIL petitioner and advocate Vishal Tiwari mentioned his petition for urgent hearing, news agency PTI reported.

The PIL sought the appointment of a five-member expert committee under the supervision of a retired apex court judge to probe the stampede. It also sought a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report on the July 2 incident and to initiate legal action against the authorities, officials and others for their negligent conduct.

CASE AGAINST BABA, MAIN ACCUSED ARRESTED
