People who have heart problems, due to the arrival of winter and cold weather, may feel a general malaise and exacerbation against the background of the cardiovascular system.
Scientists from the European Association of Cardiology remind us of this. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and according to new data, the risk of not surviving the warm spring increases several times.
The researchers followed the health of 107,090 men and women aged 35 to 80. The specialists took the necessary measures: measured blood pressure, glucose and lipid levels, body mass index, and waist circumference. The age of the participants, gender, and their bad habits was also taken into account.
The results of the analysis suggest that the risk of developing any heart diseases increased in January and February, and decreased in July and August. During the winter months, people’s blood pressure, and total cholesterol levels increased, and the waist became one centimeter wider compared to the summer season.
“A person may not even notice these changes in well-being. However, such a trend as a whole inspires concern, the authors of the work comment. We do not have a clear explanation of the reasons for such changes. Cholesterol levels may increase during the winter due to changes in food preferences, but as for the rest, it is difficult to answer.”
Scientists are going to conduct additional research, only this time they are interested in the inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere and how and why their well-being can change. Perhaps in this way, they will find answers to their questions.
