The 89-year-old actor had been in and out of south Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital for several days. From the Prime Minister and President, to Bollywood and sports personalities, tributes poured in for the ‘He-Man of Bollywood’. His last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle.
Dharmendra is known for his memorable performances in films such as ‘Ayee Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Raja Jani’, ‘Jugnu’, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Dost’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Pratiggya’, ‘Charas’, ‘Dharam Veer’, among others.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan expressed grief over the demise of legendary actor Dharmendra, remembering him as a “father figure” and a guiding force in the industry.
Taking to X, Mr. Khan wrote, “Rest in Peace Dharam ji. You were nothing short of a father figure to me… thank u for showering me with blessings and love the way you did. An inconsolable and irreplaceable loss to not just his family, but to cinema and film lovers world over. You are immortal… and your soul will live through your films and your beautiful family forever. Love you always.”
The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) expressed sorrow on the demise of legendary Indian film actor Dharmendra on Monday.
“Dharmendra Ji was not only an iconic figure in Indian cinema but also a proud son of Punjab whose humility, warmth, and artistic excellence made him beloved across the world,” NAPA said in a statement.
“His cinematic journey of over six decades, with more than 300 films to his credit, symbolised dedication, versatility and unmatched charisma. From timeless classics like ‘Sholay’ to powerful performances in romantic, action, and emotional roles, Dharmendra Ji carved an unforgettable space in the hearts of millions,” the organisation said.
It added that his legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and admirers globally.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed condolences to family and fans of veteran actor Dharmendra who passed away on Monday.
The actor-politician’s admirers in Bikaner, from where he began his political career, also mourned his loss.
In his condolence message, Chief Minister Sharma said, “The demise of renowned Bollywood actor and Padma Bhushan awardee, former Bikaner MP Dharmendra Ji, is extremely saddening. Through his exceptional acting and simple nature, Dharmendra Ji elevated Indian cinema to new heights.” He said Dharmendra’s contribution to the film industry and his personality will always remain an inspiration.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that Dharmendra won the hearts of crores of people with his unforgettable acting.
Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday expressed sorrow over the death of legendary actor Dharmendra, and said he will remain alive in the hearts of people for his memorable roles.
“Dharmendra has left a deep imprint on Indian cinema through his acting in a long and illustrious career. His demise is an irreparable loss for the cinema world. He will remain alive in the hearts of people for his memorable roles and simple personality,” Mr. Khan said in a post on X.
A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said: “… The cinema world and politics are faced with an irreparable loss after his death.” The veteran actor, who would have turned 90 on December 8, was not keeping well for a while and was in and out of a Mumbai hospital, with the family finally deciding to continue his treatment at home earlier this month.
