Rosseau (Dominica):- Hearing on handing over of diamond trader Mehul Choksi, who defrauded Indian banks, will be heard again today. High Court Judge Bernie Stephenson has ordered Choksi to appear before a magistrate and explain how he entered Dominica. Prior to this, the ongoing hearing in the High Court of Dominica was postponed till Thursday.
Meanwhile, the government of Dominica urged the court to dismiss the habeas corpus petition filed by Choksi. Choksi claimed that he was abducted from Antigua and forcibly brought to the Caribbean country of Dominica. Rejecting Choksi’s arguments, the prosecution in the High Court said that the habeas corpus petition was not maintainable as the accused entered the country illegally and was later taken into custody.
Choksi went missing on May 23 mysteriously from Antigua and Barbuda where he had been living as a civilian since 2018. He was detained for illegally entering neighboring Dominica. Choksi is currently at China Friendship Hospital.
The Associates Times, citing sources, reported that Choksi’s brother, himself a bank defaulter, has allegedly promised election funding to Lennox Linton, the leader of the opposition in Dominica, in exchange for advancing the Mehul kidnapping theory. Sources said Choksi’s brother Chetan Chinu had met Linton on May 30, where they discussed several aspects related to Mehul Choksi’s arrest and asked to take up the matter in Parliament in return for the promise of election donations.
Sources said that Chetan gave a token amount of USD 2 lakh to Linton and promised him financial assistance of over USD 1 million in the upcoming general elections. However, in an exclusive interview with ANI, Linton denied the allegations, claiming that he did not know and never met Chetan Choksi. He also said that the report is completely false and there is no truth in it.
