Israel-Hamas War : Israeli Forces Gather Outside Gaza City
Israel has continued its deadly air attacks on Gaza, with at least 9,061 people now known to have been killed in the Palestinian enclave. More than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel. 19 soldiers have also been killed since the beginning of the ground invasion.
The Israeli military has said it has surrounded Gaza City and is pressing forward, with a spokesperson adding that a ceasefire is “not on the table” despite international pressure.
At least four Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank
United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken is on his way to Israel – his third trip since October 7 – to discuss “concrete steps” to minimise harm to Gaza civilians even as the US resists a ceasefire call.
The Republican-led US House of Representatives has passed a bill providing $14.3bn in aid to Israel, but linking it to domestic spending cuts.
Thailand says it is in touch with Iran and other governments that can make contact with Hamas to try and secure the release of its citizens.
At least 23 Thais are among the more than 240 people who were taken captive by the armed group when it attacked Israel on October 7.
Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara says Iran, which is close to Hamas, has promised to help with negotiations.
About 30,000 Thais are thought to have been working on Israeli farms at the time of the attack. Nearly two dozen were killed.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who this week condemned the Israeli military’s air bombardment of Gaza and recalled his envoy to Israel, has told US President Joe Biden that Israel’s actions were violating international law.
“These Hamas attacks are without justification – they deserve global condemnation. But the response by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government also deserves our clearest condemnation,” Boric was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency after meeting Biden at the White House.
“There’s no doubt we can say the response has been disproportionate and is violating international humanitarian law,” he said.
“The right of a state to defend itself has limits, and those limits imply respecting the lives of innocent civilians, especially children, and respecting civil humanitarian law.”
Asked about Biden’s response, Boric said it was not his place to speak for the US president.
We are getting reports from our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic that Israeli forces have launched new air strikes in the vicinity of the Al-Quds Hospital.
The medical facility is located in the Tal al-Hawa area west of Gaza City. It has been repeatedly threatened with direct air strikes by Israel.
The World Health Organization has warned that striking the facility, currently housing 14,000 displaced Palestinians, as well as injured and sick patients, would be illegal under international law and could be considered a war crime.
Al Jazeera is also following up on a report of a possible casualty following an Israeli raid on the Abasan area, east of Khan Younis.
