Cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo announced half a month later than last year, slowest in 12 years

Today, March 29th (Friday), the Japan Meteorological Agency announced the blooming of cherry blossoms in Tokyo. It was observed to be 5 days later than normal and 15 days later than last year, making it the first time in 12 years that the flowers have bloomed late since 2012 (flowering on March 31st).

This is the first announcement of flowering this year among meteorological observatories in the Kanto region. Tokyo’s cherry blossom specimen tree (Somei Yoshino) is located at Yasukuni Shrine, and today the temperature has risen to nearly 20 degrees Celsius.

Last year in Tokyo, the flowers bloomed on March 14th and were in full bloom on the 22nd, but this year’s pace can be said to be about half a month slower.

year by March 29th, Sendai Yoshino cherry trees have been observed to be in full bloom at 41 meteorological observatories including Niigata and Fukushima, and full bloom has been observed at 23 meteorological observatories including Fukushima, and this year the season is later than last year in each location.

In Tokyo, this year, mid-February was the warmest on record, while there were many days with lower-than-normal temperatures from late February to early March. Although there was a temporary high temperature day in mid-March, just before flowering, the temperature continued to be lower than average again, which appears to have delayed flowering.

Starting this weekend, flowers will continue to bloom in various parts of the Kanto region.
